Phoenix Mellow (she/her) is a costume designer with a diverse background designing for film, television, commercials, and music videos. Her eclectic costume design work is featured in films Beneath, Sex Ed, Burn County, Moon Manor, and Sylvie’s Love, which earned a 2021 Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Television Movie, 2020 Chicago Indie Critics Best Costume Design Nomination, and 2020 Black Reel Awards Outstanding Costume Design Nomination. Phoenix’s TV costume design work includes comedy series Sex Lives of College Girls, AP Bio, Detroiters, and action series Chosen. Her music videos include Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen’s “Like I Used To”, Katy Perry’s "Hey, Hey, Hey", and "Small Talk", for which she earned a nomination for a Costume Designer’s Guild Award for Excellence in Short Form Design. Mellow’s assistant costume design can be seen in the feature films Black Panther, which won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Coming 2 America, Dark Phoenix, and the TV series Mad Men, Mindhunter, The OA Part II, Man in the High Castle, Watchmen, When They See Us, The Loudest Voice. Her made-to-order and costume buyer projects include for TV shows Stranger Things, Hollywood, and film Don’t Worry Darling. Phoenix was born and raised in Delaware by two artist parents. She attended The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City for fashion design and The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising for fashion design and film & TV costume design in Los Angeles. Mellow has a passion for design detail, modern and historical fashion, and bringing characters to life through investigative research. She found her calling in the film industry, which amalgamated her interest in the history behind clothing and the psychological connections between people and garments. Phoenix has a thorough knowledge of fabrication and building concept to camera. She enjoys fashion and character illustration and uses sketching as an outlet to express her work and creativity. She fuses well with directors, producers, and actors to help build their ideas and her own onto the screen. Phoenix hopes to expand the appreciation for costume designers, by fabricating real and exciting characters that speak to all types of imaginations.
